Clinical Experience

The Critical Care Fellow clinical experience is on the Critical Care Service (CCS) at DHMC. The CCS provides comprehensive care to all adult patients requiring critical care at DHMC, with the exception of patients on the cardiac service, and those patients immediately (less than 48 hours) post cardiac surgery. The CCS has 26 adult critical care beds. Patients are cared for in a mixed medical/surgical environment.

Our philosophy

We provide critical care medicine services in a truly multidisciplinary environment. This is reflected in the patient mix, which is a combined medical/surgical population and extends to our collaborative practice model. Medical professionals from all disciplines, including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physical therapists, nutritionists and social workers, work together to optimize clinical care.

Clinical rotations

Two-thirds of our clinical rotations are spent in our medical/surgical ICU providing comprehensive critical care services. The remaining third of the clinical time is on a consult service that is concerned with iinitial triage and later follow-up of critical care patients.

The role of the fellow in Critical Care Medicine

The fellow is pivotal on the Critical Care Service. From the initial triage and assessment to supervising and coordinating care, the fellow is at the center of the action. Working closely with the attending faculty and supervising residents, the fellows' experience in high quality care with state of the art facilities and equipment provides for outstanding training. Elective rotations are possible in virtually any specialty.
