Each year the pain fellow is exposed to a wide variety of patients experiencing all aspects of the pain continuum, including acute pain, chronic pain, cancer pain as well as pediatric patients with pain. Fellows work side by side with the pain attending physicians as a team. They achieve greater autonomy in the decision-making process as their experience grows. We have five board-certified pain specialists working fulltime in the pain clinic as well as a part-time nurse practitioner and two additional part time providers. We provide a full range of pain therapy including diagnostic evaluation, medical management, and procedural therapy in a multidisciplinary approach integrated with other disciplines as indicated.

We see over 8,000 patients a year at the Pain Clinic, including nearly 2,000 new patient visits. Each year we perform over 3,500 procedures including over 3,100 procedures with fluoroscopic guidance and over 450 neurolytic procedures. In 2009 we performed just under 100 spinal cord stimulator and intrathecal pump implantation procedures in the operating room.

We have pain conferences every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday morning. These consist of didactic lectures, journal club, psychology of pain sessions, and case conferences. We attend the Anesthesiology Departmental conferences on Wednesday and the Spine conferences on Thursday mornings.

The Pain Medicine Fellowship offers a well rounded experience for those wishing to pursue a career in the field of pain medicine, whether in academics or private practice. The hospital offers a collegial non-pressured atmosphere to study and learn with a wide variety of experiences available. The Upper Valley offers a beautiful cultural and recreation area to live and learn in during this fellowship year.

We welcome all inquiries.
