Evaluations
Faculty and health professional evaluate resident performance after each rotation based on "The Six Competencies":
- Patient Care
- Medical Knowledge
- Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- Professionalism
- Systems-Based Practice
Members of the Departmental Residency Committee serve as advisors to each resident. Twice a year the advisors meet formally with their assigned residents individually to discuss overall performance and progress in the program.
Prior to these six-month meetings with their advisor residents will be asked to complete a "self-assessment" of their progress. This self assessment along with the cumulative written evaluations that the faculty complete at the end of each rotation will serve as a basis of the discussion.
Of equal importance are the frequent, informal encounters advisors have with residents where residents can gain assistance and advice, and the advisor can ensure that the resident is being supported in his/her pursuits.
The residents complete confidential evaluations of faculty and rotations. This information is sent to each rotation director in an effort to continually improve the educational process.
The department subscribes to the annual resident in-service examination (RISE) sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. This examination provides each resident with information on performance compared to a national cohort of peers and helps residents identify areas of potential weakness.
