Conferences

Regularly held conferences are:

Monday Noon Conference (weekly)

This conference is held on Mondays weekly 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM in the Section of Dermatology library. Content areas covered include: didactic curriculum content as above, board review questions, clinical images.

Resident Educational Conference Morning (Weekly)

These educational half day conferences are held on Tuesdays, weekly, 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM, in the Section of Dermatology library. The chief residents, with the oversight of the Program Director, are responsible for scheduling these conferences and assigning residents or staff to present topics from the didactic curriculum. The Tuesday morning conferences are mainly used to cover book chapter curriculum reviewed through PowerPoint presentations and in the two months preceding the in-training exam, for high yield content review.

Dermatopathology Conference (weekly)

This conference is held Thursdays, weekly, 12:15 PM -1:30 PM in the Dermatopathology section teaching space in the Borwell research building, which adjoins our clinic. The attending dermatopathologist is responsible for this conference. Chapters from Wheedon are reviewed by the dermatopathology fellow or attending dermatopathologist, in concert with presentation of actual pathology cases which correspond to the chapter topic. The topics presented are organized to correlate with topics presented in the Tuesday morning sessions.

Friday Noon Conference (once a month)

This conference is held on Mondays weekly 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. Content areas covered include a monthly Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology CME article, or didactic curriculum content as above, board review questions, or clinical images.

Wednesday Dermatology Grand Rounds- 4:00 PM- 6:00 PM (1st Wednesday of the Month)

This is a CPC clinical conference. The chief resident in charge of conferences directs the conference. Dr. Nicole Pace is in charge of attendance, CME requirement documentation, and keeping a hard copy notebook log of all case presentations. Patient viewing is from 4:00-4:30, and discussion is from 4:30-5PM. At 5PM there is a lecture, usually from a local guest speaker or one of the residents. Residents are expected to present one grand round lecture a year.

Archives Journal Club – (once a month)

This is the fourth Tuesday of the month 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM The Archives of Dermatology is reviewed. A resident, in consultation with an attending, selects the articles for review. These articles are presented in an evidence based format and discussed amongst the residents and staff.

Archives Journal Club – (once a month)

This is the first Tuesday of the month 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM The journal, Dermatologic Surgery is reviewed. Dr. Nahid Vidal leads the journal club. Residents present articles selected by Dr. Vidal for review.

Melanoma Tumor Board (once a month)

This conference is held Tuesdays, once a month, 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM in the Rubin Building, Room 691. Dr. Marc Ernstoff from oncology is responsible for this conference. Cases are presented and discussed, with written recommendations and results documented in the patient medical record. A third year resident attends during their surgical rotation.

Cutaneous Lymphomas Tumor Board (once a month)

This conference is held Wednesdays, once a month, 11:00AM – 12:000 PM in Dermatopathology Conference Room in Borwell. Dr. Eric Lansigan from hematology/oncology and Dr. Kathryn Zug are responsible for this conference. Cases are presented, pathology reviewed, and discussion follows, with written recommendations and results documented in the patient medical record. The dermatopathology resident and the 1st year on the patch/cutaneous lymphomas rotation year attends.

Friday Dermatology Grand Rounds (Third Friday of the Month)

The third Friday of the month are our morning Dermatology Section conference teaching days; all faculty attend, unless away. These conferences are held in the Section of Dermatology library.

The morning conference schedule is as follows:

Dermatology Grand Rounds Lecture - 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM

The speaker is a faculty member, invited guest, visiting professor, Dartmouth-Hitchcock faculty in other discipline or resident. The residents each give one or two grand rounds lectures a year. The chief residents rotate the duty of scheduling the Grand Rounds Lecture conference speakers, in consultation with the section chief and program director. Topics are varied and include all areas of dermatology medical knowledge, patient care or ACGME competencies.

Dermatology Grand Rounds - 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM

This is a CPC clinical conference. The chief resident in charge of conferences directs the conference. Dr. Nicole Pace is in charge of attendance, CME requirement documentation, and keeping a hard copy notebook log of all case presentations. Four to six patients are evaluated in the clinic by all attendants. Patients who present a diagnostic or therapeutic challenge or patients with uncommon or particularly good teaching value presentations are invited by staff, residents, or our community-based dermatologists. After clinic evaluation, the case is formally presented by one of the chief residents. Residents are called upon to describe the presentation and generate an apt diagnostic differential. Pathology is reviewed by an attending dermatopathologist or the dermatopathology fellow. Further work-up considerations, important learning elements, and typically an evidence based literature review of a subtopic of the case is presented and summarized by a resident or rotating student. These summaries of subtopics or literature review pertaining to particular elements in a case presentation are kept in the hard-copy notebook log. The log of all cases is kept, and follow-up case review is performed as a component of this conference several times a year.

Friday Dermatopathology Conference - 10:45 AM - 11:30 AM

Recent cases with teaching value are selected from the dermatopathology service for discussion and review. Unknown slides are presented and discussed by an attending dermatopathogist who is in charge of the conference.

Journal Club - 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology is reviewed. A resident, in consultation with an attending, selects the articles for review. These articles are presented in an evidence based format and discussed amongst the residents, staff, and private practice dermatologists who attend the Friday morning conferences. New England Dermatological Society Saturday Conference (quarterly)

Four times a year residents attend the New England Dermatological Society Saturday conference. Sessions are held at Harvard Medical School, Boston University/Tufts University, Brown University, Yale University, and Dartmouth.
