The Dermatology Residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center prides itself not only on excellence in academics, but also in research. Residents are required to spearhead at least one project during their three-year course, although most residents participate in or lead multiple projects. Additionally, residents are encouraged to assist with one or more of the many ongoing clinical trials taking place within the section.
Second- and third-year residents attend the annual American Academy of Dermatology meeting and all residents have five academic days each year that can be used to attend academic meetings of their choosing. Recent meetings attended by residents include the Congress of the European Society of Contact Dermatitis, the Pathology Visions conference of the Digital Pathology Association, and the annual meetings of the American Society of Dermatopathology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, among others. Residents typically present research at these meetings, with their trip funded by the department.
Visiting and rotating students are encouraged to participate in research while rotating through the Section of Dermatology. A list of projects, case reports and other appropriate studies for medical students to collaborate on is maintained by the Assistant Chief Resident of Research and Assistant Chief Resident of Medical Education.
