Life in the Upper Valley

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is located in Lebanon, New Hampshire, adjacent to the Connecticut River, which defines the border with Vermont.  Voted the top small town in the nation by livability.com, “Lebanon offers residents natural amenities and fulfilling life experiences that you just won’t find in big cities. Lebanon’s visual appeal, strong economy and educational system, affordable housing, and civic engagement make it the top small town in the country."    Lebanon is just minutes away from the Dartmouth College campus; two hours northwest of Boston; five hours north of New York City and three hours south of Montreal, Quebec.  It is accessible via Interstates 89 and 91; airports in Manchester, NH, Lebanon, NH, Burlington, VT and Boston, MA and by bus and Amtrak rail service to White River Junction, VT.  Reasonably priced coach bus service is available between Lebanon and Boston.

The scenic Upper Valley region, offers a wide range of year-round outdoor recreational activities as well as diverse social, cultural, and artistic communities.  Situated near the Appalachian Trail, the area is renowned for its skiing, hiking, canoeing, and kayaking.  In addition to Dartmouth’s Hopkins Center for the Arts, leading venues for the performing arts include the Lebanon Opera House and the Northern Stage Company. The area is also host to variety of ethnic restaurants. 

Fellows choose Dartmouth-Hitchcock to embrace the quality of life offered by Upper Valley region.  The region has little to no traffic and quiet residential neighborhoods.  Biking lanes can be found on most major streets.  Running trails surround the Medical Center.  The Northern Rail trail, available for hiking and biking, runs 58 miles south from downtown Lebanon to Boscawen.   In the winter, informal cross country skiing and snow shoeing trails appear in the many wooded areas of the Upper Valley with groomed trails found on the Dartmouth College Golf Course and many surrounding towns.  The region boasts 17 farmers markets and a wide variety of locally made products ranging from bacon to whiskey.

New Hampshire’s only level 1 trauma center is situated in an ideal environment which provides a perfect place to train and live.
