COVID-19 and the Internal Medicine Residency

In addition to the information available on our institution's COVID-19 information page, our response has included several items specific to residents and GME training.

We require and provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for all residents on all clinical services

  • We have never experienced a shortage in PPE. Our institution has invested heavily in reusable and locally sourced PPE such that we do not anticipate ever having a PPE shortage.
  • Resident work rooms have been rearranged and additional rooms have been resourced to ensure social distancing.
  • Providers potentially caring for COVID-19 patients, such as the code team, have additional PPE to ensure their safety.
  • Our program's bottom line is very simple: No resident is ever asked to provide patient care without adequate PPE.

We have multiple in house testing options

Our Microbiology Laboratory provides both a rapid PCR test for syptomatic patients, and a more sensitive PCR test to ensure recovering or asymptomatic patients are negative. Antibody testing is also available. All tests are run in house and are available 24/7.

Expanded use of phone and video appointments

We have expanded our use of phone and video appointments through our Connected Care—Telehealth operations. Residents receive dedicated instruction in telehealth visits, and manage continuity clinic patients both in-person and through telehealth.

Leading-edge research is under way

The Department of Medicine is involved in leading-edge research into the causes and treatments of COVID-19. Amongst many, projects have included the use of Remdesivir and the role of convalescent serum in critically ill patients.
