Being a primarily single-site program provides significant benefits for residents: all faculty are on site, and no time is spent getting from one location to the next through the course of the week. The Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in White River Junction, VT, is less than a 15-minute drive from DHMC, so residents can attend morning conference at DHMC before starting their clinic day at the VA. Traffic is mild, and parking is free at both locations.
The DHMC adult Eye Clinic—together with the pediatric Eye Clinic—occupies 14,000 square feet and features 33 exam lanes, ophthalmic lasers, a photography suite, minor procedure rooms and extensive diagnostic testing equipment.
The Eye Clinic is located centrally within the Lebanon complex. Almost all relevant facilities—OR, laboratory, radiology, hospital inpatients, emergency department, research labs, conference rooms, cafeteria and food courts, medical library, bank, pharmacy, and most other clinical departments—are within a five-minute walk of the Clinic. The Outpatient Surgery Center is a 10-minute walk from the Clinic.
Surgical procedures at DHMC are performed in the main hospital operating rooms and (primarily) at the Outpatient Surgery Center on the DHMC campus. VA procedures are performed in the VA operating rooms. All operating facilities have advanced current-model procedural equipment and operating microscopes.
There is a surgical wet lab with microscopes and equipment for animal eye practice. We are in the process of acquiring an EyeSi surgical simulator for cataract surgery, which will be located in our 24-hour simulation center.
