We believe we have one of the most tight-knit orthopaedic surgery programs in the country with close, collegial relationships between faculty and residents. Based primarily at a single clinical site, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, we build trust and rapport early on which affords us more-involved, early operative experience. We are dedicated to providing high-quality care to a large catchment population that includes the Upper Valley and beyond. We work hard daily while we hone our knowledge and skills in the pursuit of becoming adept orthopaedic surgeons. With access to the immense resources and talented mentors of both the hospital and Dartmouth College, we have all the tools needed to be successful.
Dartmouth has it all. The best and most welcoming residents who share a genuine camaraderie. Excellent academic facility - learning one on one from renowned faculty and a culture which encourages a positive yet challenging learning environment. A beautiful and active place to balance life outside residency. I LOVE it here.Kelly Mead, Class of 2022
The Upper Valley along the border of Vermont and New Hampshire is a collection of small towns that capture iconic New England. It’s an incredible place to live and learn. We have a host of outdoor activities year-round: hiking, biking, golf, skiing, snowboarding, and much more. There are great restaurants both locally and in the surrounding areas and a surplus of farmers markets. The proximity to Dartmouth College comes with a small college town atmosphere and an excess of cultural events for such a small town. It’s a very family-friendly area with great schools.
We get to experience city life when we spend 6 months (3 months as a PGY2, 3 months as a PGY3) in Boston while rotating at storied institutions like Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Boston Children’s Hospital.
The Upper Valley and surrounding areas offer amazing outdoor activities and events as well as a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy.Tracy Borsinger, Class of 2022
Dartmouth truly is a unique place to train. The orthopaedics department is filled with a close-knit group of residents who enjoy working together and a very involved and supportive faculty. The breadth and depth of clinical and operative exposure is exceptional, and the program has a strong history of producing well-trained and well-rounded surgeons.Corey Resnick, Class of 2023
It was apparent that this was a program where people worked well together, across all levels of the program. Also, I felt the commitment to resident education was second to none. My experience here thus far has confirmed this every day, and my excitement about being a part of this program continues to grow.Sam Kunkel, Class of 2020
The orthopaedic program at Dartmouth has a special feeling to it. I literally spent six waking hours on interview day in the Upper Valley and knew this is where I would want to do residency training. I also knew that it would be a great fit for my family with a multitude of outdoor activities and events.Brian Fisher, Class of 2020
Apart from being located in one of the most beautiful areas of the country, Dartmouth stood apart in that it offered a single environment that provided the best training, a commitment to research, and a focus on resident education. Top notch training is achieved through strong early operative experiences with highly respected faculty. The department’s dedication to advancing the field of orthopaedics is evident by the numerous completed and ongoing research projects, such as the SPORT trial. I feel confident that the orthopaedic program at Dartmouth will not only train me to be an excellent orthopaedic surgeon, but will mold me to be a better, well-rounded provider of healthcare.Daniel “Chip” Pierce, Class of 2021
