Dartmouth ophthalmology residents are encouraged to engage beyond the clinic and operating room through advocacy and outreach, interest-permitting. Through these experiences, trainees develop a deeper understanding of physician advocacy, access to care, and the role ophthalmologists can play in shaping policy at the local, state, and national levels.
Each year, a PGY-2 and PGY-3 resident attend the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Mid-Year Forum in Washington, DC, where residents meet with legislators and learn firsthand how health policy shapes patient care and the future of ophthalmology. Residents have also remained active in regional legislative efforts across New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, including advocacy work with the NH Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons.
