Catheter-based procedures are performed in dedicated angiography suites in interventional radiology, the OR (hybrid suite), and the cardiac catheterization lab.
Procedure complexity will be commensurate with level of training, so that:
- PGY-1 residents perform primarily diagnostic arteriography and venography.
- PGY-2 residents perform basic interventional procedures.
- PGY-3 and -4 residents perform more complex interventions.
- PGY-5 chief residents perform the most complex interventions, such as carotid stenting, and have the opportunity to instruct junior residents in basic procedures.
*Note also that a considerable volume of hybrid interventional and open procedures occur during inpatient rotations as well.
