Welcome to the Breast Imaging Fellowship at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center! Our goal is to provide the breast imaging fellow with a comprehensive, well-rounded education that should enable them to work anywhere in private or academic practice. Only 1 fellowship position is available, so the fellow has extensive hands-on experience throughout the year and one-on-one teaching from the breast faculty.

Education

The curriculum for this fellowship can be viewed on the program details page. Additional experience in breast surgery, radiation therapy, oncology and plastic surgery related to breast cancer will be offered with the respective providers. The breast fellow will obtain leadership experience through their interactions with the multidisciplinary breast conference each week, at which they will present biweekly. Fellows will attend the weekly Breast Fellowship Consortium lectures as well as experience extensive 1:1 teaching from the faculty. Dr. Petra Lewis, the Fellowship Director, is known internationally for her breast imaging and faculty education and is the co-director of 2 Medality (formerly MRI Online) breast imaging fellowships. The fellow’s attendance at the annual Society of Breast Imaging meeting will be supported and funded by the department.

Research opportunities are encouraged with Dr. Diflorio and others in the Comprehensive Breast Program. Ongoing research opportunities include evaluating innovative breast imaging technologies such as near-infrared spectroscopy, electrical impedance, and microwave imaging. We are performing body composition studies to evaluate the role of mammographic and MRI-detected lymph node adiposity in poor breast cancer outcomes. As a research site for the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium, we participate in population science designed to evaluate optimal breast cancer screening strategies and methods to decrease healthcare disparities in breast cancer screening and diagnosis.
