Curriculum

The Advanced Breast Imaging Fellowship program curriculum will include a combination of clinical, research, and academic activities, tailored to the individual fellow's needs and interests.

The curriculum will include, but is not limited to:

  • Advanced mammography: Fellows will further refine their skills in interpreting screening and diagnostic mammograms, including digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM). They will also learn advanced techniques in problem-solving and image interpretation, including evaluation of complex cases and management of high-risk patients.
  • Breast ultrasound: Fellows will gain expertise in performing and interpreting breast ultrasound exams, including advanced techniques such as elastography, and handheld ultrasound. They will also learn to perform ultrasound-guided procedures, including core needle biopsies and fine needle aspirations.
  • Breast MRI: Fellows will receive in-depth training in breast MRI, including interpretation of breast MRI exams for screening, diagnostic, and problem-solving purposes.
  • Image-guided breast procedures: Fellows will gain proficiency in image-guided breast procedures, including stereotactic, ultrasound-guided, and MRI-guided breast biopsies, as well as wire and seed localizations.
  • Multidisciplinary breast care: Fellows will participate in interdisciplinary conferences, including breast tumor boards, and learn to collaborate with other specialists such as breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists. They will also learn about the management of benign and malignant breast diseases, breast 2 cancer screening, and risk assessment. Fellows will be offered an opportunity to do clinical rotations in breast pathology, surgery, plastic surgery, radiation therapy and oncology.
  • Research and academic activities: Fellows will be involved in breast imaging research projects, including retrospective and prospective studies, and will have the opportunity to present their research findings at national conferences and submit abstracts and manuscripts for publication. They will be involved in monthly breast journal club.
  • Teaching, mentorship and leadership skills: Fellows will be involved in teaching and mentoring residents, medical students, and technologists in breast imaging, developing skills in providing education and guidance to junior colleagues. They will also have the opportunity to participate in quality improvement initiatives and leadership roles within the breast imaging department.
  • Professional development: Fellows will have opportunities for professional development, including networking with experts in the field, building relationships with potential employers, and preparing for job interviews. They will also gain experience in managing complex clinical scenarios, interacting with patients and communicating imaging findings to referring physicians. Attendance at the annual Society of Breast Imaging meeting will be supported by the department.
