Welcome to Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship program! Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth is the largest academic medical center system north of Boston, located in the beautiful upper Connecticut River valley. We are a medium-size fellowship program (“Goldilocks zone” with 6 Child Fellows) within a large two-state (Vermont and New Hampshire) rural region. Dartmouth College provides a unique cultural and intellectual hub and a rich diversity of resources for our area. Our community is safe, family-oriented with abundant outdoor activities available year-round. We emphasize tailoring our training experiences to our fellows' unique interests, where learning the art, craft, and science of child psychiatry can be pursued with strong collegial support. Our program has a close-knit, family feel where fellows work closely with faculty in providing subspecialty care across a variety of clinical experiences (e.g., PANS/PANDAS, Autism Care, Neurodevelopmental, Psychotherapy, Neuropsychological testing, Psychopharmacology, and Consultation-Liaison, to name a few). We have been doing Tele-psychiatry for nearly 20 years owing to our rural location and fellows have excellent opportunities to develop expertise as collaborative consultants with Pediatrician and primary care colleagues. We have no overnight or in-house call. We have excellent resources for those fellows seeking research or with population health-oriented interests, including  The Dartmouth Institute for Healthcare Policy Research, Thayer Engineering School, Tuck Business School and our Translational Sciences program-SYNERGY.

There are opportunities through our Leadership in Preventative Medicine Program to pursue an MPH simultaneously with Child Psychiatry training at no cost to you. We have an extraordinarily diverse group of Child Fellows who go on to pursue a variety of careers in academic child psychiatry, research, further fellowship training in Forensics, Autism and Addictions, as well as hospital or group-based practice. There are many opportunities in the local region for fellows to pursue their careers after training. Are you looking for a high volume, high intensity, high-stress program in a big city setting? Then look further, because that is not us. If you are looking for a program that offers a broad training experience in child psychiatry, emphasizes quality in learning, and has close working relationships with faculty then we just might be the program for you. We would be happy to speak with you about the many exciting opportunities here, so please feel free to reach out to us for more information.

Working at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center

Conferences

Every Tuesday the Psychiatry department hosts Grand Rounds for all of its sections. Psychiatry also hosts a department wide Journal Club at noon on Fridays. When meeting in person for Journal Club, Psychiatry hosts a light lunch. In addition to these, Thursdays are dedicated to Didactics for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Twice a year during Didactics we go off-site for a field trip of sorts to another institution to see how they practice and educate, and to other locations to see how they provide care. Another special Didactic event we hold twice a year is an Ethics Case Conference that has quickly become a favorite of all the Fellows, as well as the PGY-3 Residents who join us.

Orientation, simulation and skills labs

We have a Patient Safety Training Center, also known as the "Sim Center."

There are skills labs, including suturing, laparoscopic and robotics training and more. While the Sim Center offers many training opportunities, the one most utilized by our fellows is renewal of their BLS there. If a fellows is interested in utilizing more open opportunities there, electives can be explored.
