Welcome to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Department of Surgery

We are living in unprecedented times. With the COVID pandemic, not only have we seen incredibly accelerated change, but also incredible resiliency and opportunity to impact our future. Throughout all of this, I have had every reason to be proud of our surgeons and our health system—there has been an unwavering commitment to outstanding patient care and care of each other.

I am also proud that our educational mission remains stronger than ever and in General Surgery, this is largely due to the dynamic team of Drs. Kari Rosenkranz (General Surgery Program Director), and Timothy Millington (Associate Program Director). Along with colleagues across our 11 Sections, you couldn’t ask for a better group of surgeons and educators as your teaching faculty.

The Match is an exciting time—one that most of us remember throughout our careers. This year will be no different from that perspective, but wholly different from every other year. Be “all in.” Engage in the process and embrace opportunities. You’ll find that we offer robust clinical training and unique opportunities for personal and professional growth over the course of a 5, 6, or 7 year training period.

We look forward to meeting you and seeing your bright futures unfold!

With my best wishes,
Sandra L. Wong, MD MS
Chair, Department of Surgery
William N and Bessie Allyn Professor of Surgery

For prospective residents

Welcome to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center General Surgery!

We hope that our website will give you a glimpse of the outstanding clinical training you can expect at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, while highlighting the beautiful, rural environment in which we provide it. Our residents and faculty work hard but also have the luxury of a beautiful surrounding area in which to achieve a good work-life balance. The program self-selects for individuals with intelligence and work ethic who also value balance, family, and outdoor activities. We celebrate and value diversity. We are fully committed to providing a non-judgmental environment in which all residents feel respected and valued regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference or gender identity. Although the COVID 19 pandemic has reshaped the ways in which you will see and understand programs, we are hopeful that our culture will be reflected in the pages before you and across the internet when you virtually visit. At Dartmouth you will find a culture of support, expectations and close interactions. As many have observed, if we were to summarize our culture in 1 word, it would be “camaraderie”.
