Program Director's Welcome

Residency is an amazing experience, where you get to take the skills learned in medical school and apply them to the care of real patients. You will be the one primarily responsible for the care of patients. You will be the one making decisions, and discussing treatment options with families. It is an awesome responsibility, and immensely fulfilling.

Here at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Residency education is our core mission. We value and promote a friendly, innovative, and collaborative environment for learning. I focus my energy on maximizing each resident's potential and I'm proud of our graduates' successes. Our program will help you build your career in whatever direction you wish through outstanding clinical experiences, one-on-one career counseling from residency program leadership, and academic mentorship. Our graduates have matched to fellowship, become hospitalists and primary care physicians, been accepted to business school, developed research careers, started businesses, and more. Your success is our main focus.

Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center is a special place. Our medical center covers 2 million patients in New Hampshire and Vermont. Our Case Mix Index, a measure of the acuity of illness in Medicare patients, is as high as any urban center. We have a full array of subspecialty care and fellowships. All this is located in a beautiful spot in New England with minimal traffic and hassles. Hiking, skiing, lake activities, and other outdoor activities aren't "nearby", they are right in our town and backyards.

As Seuss says:

You're off to great places,
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So... get on your way!

Please explore our website and see what we have to offer. We're thrilled that you're considering us for the next stage of your training to help you "get on your way!" If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly!

Sincerely,

Graham Atkins, MbChB
