Welcome to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency! I’m Graham Atkins, the program director of the internal medicine residency, and I hope this site will give you a sense of what makes our program so special.

We are uniquely located in rural northern New England and care for 2 million patients living in New Hampshire and Vermont with a case mix index, a measure of the acuity of illness in Medicare patients, equivalent to academic urban tertiary care centers. Our categorical residency program, which includes a primary care track, trains 20 to 25 residents per year at our two sites, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and the White River Junction Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont.

We support the academic development of each resident by offering extensive opportunities to teach students and residents during our formal instruction in resident education (FIRE) rotation in the PGY-2 year. We also have pathways, which residents may enter in their PGY-2 year, that build additional skills including: the medical educator pathway; the health equity pathway; the hospital medicine pathway; and the ABIM research pathway.

Dartmouth has a full array of subspecialties and fellowships in which residents may continue their training. Residents can also take advantage of The Dartmouth Institute nearby, earning a tuition-free MPH in the Leadership and Preventative Medicine Residency. Alumni surveys confirm that our graduates feel well trained and ready to continue their professional lives after residency. Those who pursue advanced training successfully match into highly competitive fellowships.

Dartmouth is a warm and welcoming community that helps residents develop into outstanding clinicians while promoting wellness, academic achievement, and collegiality. Our residents are a tight-knit, well-rounded group of physicians who support, teach and learn from one another. They value hard work and camaraderie and have found a supportive program that can help them grow.

Our program will help you build your career in whatever direction you wish through outstanding clinical experiences, one-on-one career counseling from residency program leadership, and academic mentorship. Your success is our main focus. We're thrilled that you're considering us for the next stage of your training. Please explore our website and see what we have to offer, and better yet, come see us for a rotation, an interview, or at our second look day.
