Global oncology

Global oncology is a rapidly growing academic field with distinct research questions and clinical considerations. Through the Dartmouth Center for Global Oncology, fellows can pursue a global oncology elective centered on onsite clinical training at the Rwanda Cancer Center in Kigali — practicing oncology in a low-resource setting and helping teach physicians training from across Africa. Electives run two to eight weeks during the second or third year, and continuity clinics can be arranged at international sites staffed by American board-certified hematologist-oncologists.

The elective is led by Dr. Mary Chamberlin, Director of Global Oncology Education, who has built Dartmouth's oncology platform in Rwanda since 2015, and is supported by the Dartmouth Center for Global Oncology and by Dartmouth Without Borders. Fellows who have participated in this work have gone on to academic careers focused on global oncology.

Leadership in Preventive Medicine

This program is designed for fellows interested in assessing medical outcomes and leading change and improvement in health care systems. It combines clinical training in Hematology/Oncology with Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center's two-year Leadership Preventive Medicine Residency (LPMR), extending the total length of training by one year.

  • PGY-6: The third year of Hematology/Oncology also serves as Year 1 of the LPMR. Continuity clinics in hematology and oncology pause for the first six months and resume in the second half of the year.
  • PGY-7: Year 2 of the LPMR. Fellows complete their hematology and oncology continuity clinics and any remaining required rotations alongside a practicum project.

On completion, fellows are board-eligible in Hematology, Oncology, and Preventive Medicine, and earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) through The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice.
