Clinical experiences here are divided between our 2 major teaching sites, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and the Veteran's Affairs White River Junction Medical Center (VAMC), which is located 10 miles from Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
These 2 institutions offer a wide spectrum of clinical disease severity, patient demographics, and medical delivery systems.
Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center is an academic, tertiary care medical center providing primary care for the local population, and subspecialty referrals, critical care, and tertiary care for the regional area. Our case mix severity index is equivalent to academic centers in Boston and New York City.
Inpatient services
Inpatient services are divided into General Medicine, Cardiology, and Hematology. Critical care is provided in a Medical ICU and Coronary Care Unit staffed 24/7 with ABMS-certified critical care specialists, and multiple specialty focused Intermediate Care units including Cardiac, Neurology, Hematology, and Medicine Step Down care. Our residents rotate through all of these services during their training.
Phlebotomy, IV, radiology, transport, and specialty consultations (medical, surgical, and subspecialist) are available 24/7. Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center uses a fully digital radiology system. All images are viewable from any computer within our system.
All 24 hour call in our program has been replaced with a night float based system at both sites.
Outpatient services
Outpatient services at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center include a busy General Internal Medicine clinic and a full array of subspecialty ambulatory clinics. Residents have a continuity clinic in GIM throughout their training, and have the opportunity to work in the subspecialty outpatient clinics during elective months. Outpatient services are delivered in an attached Ambulatory Care center improving the resident experience in the outpatient clinic. Residents also rotate through the Emergency Department throughout their training.
The VA White River Junction Medical Center serves as a community hospital for the local veteran population and their families. Working closely with faculty, residents follow their patients throughout their hospital stay, providing continuity of care among the medical wards, emergency room, and ICU. Support services including IV, phlebotomy, and radiology are available 24 hours a day. Subspecialty consults are available through VA staff, or through referral to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
Outpatient experiences at the VA include a continuity clinic for residents, emergency room experiences, and subspecialty outpatient clinics.
