Why I chose Dartmouth
Dartmouth is a truly special program that checks all of the boxes for me. Aside from offering elite clinical training at a top orthopedic institution, it’s genuinely a “resident-first” program with faculty who are wholeheartedly invested in our education, development, and well-being—a reality that was immediately apparent during my away rotation here. Dartmouth has a strong culture of excellence and integrity, and several people in the department exemplify the kind of physician and person I aspire to become. The department consistently makes a conscious effort to prioritize our patients and go above and beyond for them. The residents are extremely tight-knit and among the happiest residents I encountered throughout the interview process. Lastly, the Upper Valley is a wonderful place to live. It is close to my family and has abundant access to beautiful nature and all the outdoor activities I enjoy in my free time.

Why I chose Dartmouth
I chose Dartmouth after completing a rotation here and experiencing firsthand the program's extraordinary commitment to resident and medical student education. The culture emphasizes progressive autonomy, mentorship, and preparing residents to become confident, independent surgeons. The Upper Valley is an exceptional place to raise a family, with abundant outdoor opportunities and a welcoming community. I was also drawn to Dartmouth's unique role as the region's only tertiary referral center, which provides exposure to a diverse and complex patient population while caring for a hardworking, salt-of-the-earth community, that reminded me of the one in which I was raised.

Why I chose Dartmouth
As a rotating student it was immediately clear how genuinely invested Dartmouth’s faculty and residents are in teaching. I found myself in hour-long discussions about the evolution of hip implants, applied anatomy, and the physics underlying orthopaedic principles. These conversations were as intellectually stimulating as they were simply fun. The chance to care for a range of patients and learn this craft in a hospital in the middle of the woods felt like a uniquely special opportunity, and one that resonated deeply as someone coming from Alaska. This community and all the people at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center drew me in immediately, and I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of it.

Why I chose Dartmouth
When I rotated at Dartmouth I very quickly realized there was no other program like it. It is quite literally a level one academic medical center in the middle of a forest, surrounded by the beautiful Upper Valley and situated next to a bustling Ivy League university. The size of the program and the dedication to teaching at a resident level foster nuanced, longitudinal instruction and mentorship across the full breadth of orthopaedic sub-specialties in a way that stood out to me compared to other programs. And yet unlike many other smaller programs that may offer similar benefits, Dartmouth is a major academic center with a vast catchment area and exposure to a well-rounded mix of orthopaedic pathologies. Finally, the staff and residents have a down-to-earth demeanor enriched by a passion for patient care as well as a passion for the outdoors and active living. It seemed to me that the nourishment and enjoyment the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center staff and residents get from living in such a beautiful place helps them show up to work with energy and commitment to excellent care. I wanted to train in a place that would provide tailored, long-term, and excellent evidence-based instruction. I also wanted to train in a place that I felt would nourish me and provide an exciting and well-rounded life outside the hospital. Dartmouth does both of those things in a truly unique way.
