Why I chose Dartmouth
Dartmouth Orthopaedics is incredibly special because it has struck the balance of elite surgical training, resident-well being, and impactful research, all in one of the most objectively beautiful locations in the country. You would also be hard-pressed to find a more supportive and familial environment to train in anywhere. I chose Dartmouth for the opportunity to learn one-on-one from an inspiring faculty that is committed to making its residents proficient and well-rounded orthopaedic surgeons that will advance their fields. From top to bottom, there is a culture of excellence here that translates to phenomenal fellowship matches each year and every day, I am excited to go to work with this group. I feel so fortunate to be a part of the Dartmouth team and, as a native of New Hampshire, for the ability to give back to the community that raised me.

Why I chose Dartmouth
Dartmouth truly captured my heart with its genuine commitment to nurturing the surgical skills and academic interests of its residents while fostering a balanced and fulfilling life outside the hospital. Dartmouth was exactly what I wanted in a training program--a major academic center serving a large rural catchment area, offering diverse exposure to various orthopaedic specialties and pathologies, all under exceptional faculty mentorship. During my rotation, I was impressed by the range of complex surgical cases and traumas I encountered. The residents and faculty created an atmosphere filled with teamwork, laughter, and camaraderie, including me as a valued member of the team from day one. Additionally, the Upper Valley is a magical place to train and live, offering countless opportunities for lake, river, and mountain adventures. Where else would I get to live on a blueberry farm during residency?

After spending time here as a medical student, I knew this environment would encourage personal growth in tandem with phenomenal training. Why I chose Dartmouth
I chose Dartmouth because the faculty here is exceptionally committed to cultivating the surgical skill, academic interest, and life outside the hospital of their residents. When I rotated here as a medical student, the residents were engaged with complex cases, busy OR schedules, consults, caring for rural and underserved patients, and evidenced-based education while simultaneously teaching each other, lending a hand when needed, and having a ton of fun. Plus, New Hampshire is stunning and full of more craft IPAs, swimming holes, mountain/gravel biking, and local cheese than my wildest dreams!

The support staff in the OR’s and elsewhere in the hospital were also incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I felt like I had found a group of people with whom I would love to spend the next years of my training. Additionally, the hospital is surrounded by forests and hiking trails—how cool is that?! Why I chose Dartmouth
When I rotated at Dartmouth I very quickly realized there was no other program like it. It is quite literally a level one academic medical center in the middle of a forest, surrounded by the beautiful Upper Valley and situated next to a bustling Ivy League university. The size of the program and the dedication to teaching at a resident level foster nuanced, longitudinal instruction and mentorship across the full breadth of orthopaedic sub-specialties in a way that stood out to me compared to other programs. And yet unlike many other smaller programs that may offer similar benefits, Dartmouth is a major academic center with a vast catchment area and exposure to a well-rounded mix of orthopaedic pathologies. Finally, the staff and residents have a down-to-earth demeanor enriched by a passion for patient care as well as a passion for the outdoors and active living. It seemed to me that the nourishment and enjoyment the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center staff and residents get from living in such a beautiful place helps them show up to work with energy and commitment to excellent care. I wanted to train in a place that would provide tailored, long-term, and excellent evidence-based instruction. I also wanted to train in a place that I felt would nourish me and provide an exciting and well-rounded life outside the hospital. Dartmouth does both of those things in a truly unique way.

I continued to feel their support even after my sub-internship was long over. And, beyond the doors of the hospital, the outdoor opportunities afforded by life in the Upper Valley were hard to beat. The ease of access to beautiful spaces and trails made destressing a cinch. When I reflected on what was important to me, the environment that I experienced both within the hospital and surrounding it made Dartmouth the obvious choice.

Why I chose Dartmouth
Dartmouth’s interview day was one of the most thorough I participated in and showed right away the program’s commitment to resident education. With only 1 fellow in the department, residents are given more opportunities for learning and more one-on-one time with attendings. Additionally, the department’s national leadership in health policy and outcomes research was a huge draw for me. Being originally from NH, I also looked forward to the opportunity to live close to home, family, and friends in the beautiful Upper Valley.

Why I chose Dartmouth
Dartmouth Orthopaedics is truly in a league of its own and the ideal program for resident training. All orthopaedic sub-specialties are not only represented at DHMC, but the attendings under whom we train are veritable titans of the field. As the only tertiary referral center in a ~100 mile radius, there is an abundance of complex pathology to which we provide care. Beyond the educational opportunities, what sets Dartmouth apart is the genuine investment in one another and support amongst the department. The entire orthopaedics team, irrespective of whether they are part of the clinical, administrative, or research staff, has a familial dynamic and works to help each member excel. Outside of work, the Upper Valley is simply breathtaking and truly a playground for those who love the outdoors.
