Visiting Student Rotation

Thank you for your interest in our program. We are excited to resume hosting visiting clerkships, starting on May 22, 2023.

We welcome interested fourth-year medical students to visit the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. Experience our unique training environment first-hand while working closely with our dedicated faculty and residents. Enjoy the beautiful environment and community of northern New England. Learn how you can further your training at a collegial, high-quality, successful program.

We generally offer 4-week rotations with students being assigned to different orthopaedic subspecialty services in two 2-week blocks. As a visiting student, you are encouraged to immerse yourself as a member of the orthopaedic team contributing to the care of patients in a variety of settings. You will have the opportunity to assess all aspects of an orthopaedic surgical practice while furthering your orthopaedic clinical knowledge and skills.

You will be assigned patients to care for on the wards and are invited to participate in the operating room. You are encouraged to see patients in the clinic with faculty and will be assigned new patients to work-up. You will also be assigned a call schedule to accompany the resident-on-call who sees all of the orthopaedic consults. It is expected that you attend the orthopaedic conferences daily and make a presentation on an interesting orthopaedic case encountered during your time here.

The elective is overseen by Dr. Alexander Orem.

If you are interested in visiting, please take a look at the Fourth Year Medical Student Elective Program website at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. The Orthopaedics Sub-Internship is listed as ORTH-410 under the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Geisel School Electives. Information on housing accommodations can also be found on the website above.
