There are several scheduled subspecialty conferences each week. During the month of July, there is a “boot camp” for incoming fellows that covers basic topics and procedures in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
- Pulmonary conferences: Pulmonary conference occurs weekly on Thursdays at 4 pm. The format includes case presentations, journal clubs (both current and “classic” literature), topic reviews, and an open forum to discuss challenging cases. Throughout the year guest speakers from other institutions will also present at this conference. Two days per month there is a didactic session delivered by faculty covering a core topic in pulmonary medicine.
- Critical care conferences: The Critical Care section meets twice weekly at 12:15 pm. On Tuesdays, there is a fellow-led conference. This includes case presentations, journal clubs and Morbidity and Mortality conference. On Thursdays there is a didactic session delivered by faculty covering a core topic in critical care medicine.
- Multidisciplinary thoracic oncology conference: The Thoracic Tumor Board meets on Tuesdays at 8 am to discuss and make recommendations regarding the diagnosis and treatment of patients with suspected or confirmed lung cancer. This is attended by pulmonary, thoracic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology and thoracic radiology.
- Interstitial Lung Disease Conference: This occurs on the third Friday of the month at noon. It is attended by rheumatology and pulmonary faculty and fellows along with thoracic radiology. Interesting and oftentimes challenging cases are discussed.
- Research Conference: This occurs on the second Friday of the month at noon. The goal of this conference is to introduce fellows to the research activities of members of the pulmonary and critical care section (and collaborating departments) and to provide a broad overview of topics related to research (e.g. preparing a poster or manuscript). Fellows will also have ample opportunity to present their research in progress.
In addition, fellows are encouraged to attend the regularly scheduled Department of Medicine Morbidity and Mortality conference on Wednesday and Medical Grand Rounds on Friday.
