Required Rotations and Electives

Required rotations

The Dartmouth Hitchcock Neurology residency requires all residents to complete the following rotations some of which are required by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and some with are required by this program:

  • 6 Blocks General Inpatient Service
  • 6 Blocks Vascular Inpatient Service
  • 3 Blocks General Consult Service
  • 3 Blocks Pediatric Neurology
  • 1 Block Psychiatry
  • 1 Block Neuro ICU Service
  • 1 Block Night Float
  • 2 Blocks Epilepsy/EMU
  • 1 Block Neuromuscular/EMG
  • ½ Block Neuro Radiology
  • ½ Block Hospice and Palliative Care
  • ½ Block Headache Medicine

Electives

Residents will have a total of approximately 22 weeks of elective time throughout their residency. Electives may include the following areas:

  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Clinical epilepsy
  • Headache
  • Movement Disorders
  • Neuro-immunology/Multiple sclerosis
  • Neuromuscular disease and clinical neurophysiology
  • Neuro-oncology
  • Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Neuropathology
  • Neuroradiology
  • Pain medicine
  • Sleep disorders

Current block rotations

PG1

  • 7 blocks of Medicine (IM will schedule)
  • 1 block of IM night float - split into 2 two-week blocks
  • 1 block of Emergency Medicine
  • 1 block of Medicine elective
  • 1 block that consists of Adult General Inpatient Neurology, Adult Vascular Inpatient Neurology, and General Consult Service
  • 1 block of Outpatient Neurology
  • 1 block of Neurology Bootcamp

PG2

  • 2-3 blocks of Adult General Inpatient Neurology (average, can vary)
  • 2-3 blocks Adult Inpatient Vascular Neurology (average, can vary)
  • 1 block of night float- this will be split into 2 two-week blocks during the year.
  • 1 block of Psychiatry
  • 1 block of Pediatric Neurology
  • 1 block Clinical Neurophysiology (including EEG, EMG, and Intra-operative Monitoring)
  • 1 block Neuro ICU
  • 2 weeks of Neuro Radiology
  • 2 weeks of Outpatient Epilepsy
  • 2 blocks of Elective

PG3

  • 2-3 blocks Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Vascular Neurology Team leader (average, can vary)
  • 2-3 blocks General Consult Service (average, can vary)
  • 1 block of night float – this will be broken into 2 two-week rotations
  • 1 block of Pediatric Neurology
  • 1 block of Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
  • 3-4 blocks of Electives (average, can vary)

PG4

  • 3-4 blocks Adult Inpatient General Neurology, Chief Resident (average, can vary)
  • 1 block of Pediatric Neurology
  • 1 block of night float – this will be broken into 2 two-week rotations
  • 1 block of Headache
  • 1 block of Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
  • 2 weeks Palliative Medicine
  • 2 weeks Neuro Oncology
  • 3-4 blocks of Electives (average, can vary)
