Welcome to the Otolaryngology Residency Program

Welcome to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Otolaryngology Residency Program website! We are delighted that you have taken an interest in our program. The residency program started in 2008. We currently take 1 resident per year and have 10 core faculty members as of August 2020, most of whom have subspecialty training in the following areas:

  • Facial plastic surgery
  • Head and neck oncology
  • Microvascular reconstructive surgery
  • Neurotology
  • Oral maxillofacial surgery
  • Pediatric otolaryngology
  • Rhinology

Although we are a small program, we believe this to be a unique strength. In addition to a strong commitment to excellence in patient care, each faculty member is highly committed to resident education. We understand that each resident comes into our program with certain strengths and weaknesses as well as specific interests. It is our job to work with each resident so he/she can play to his/her strengths, improve on his/her weaknesses, and build on his/her career and specialty interests.

Small size, big opportunities

Due to our small size, as a learner you will regularly work one-on-one with your attending. Our curriculum is designed to engage residents operatively early in their training – it is not unusual for a junior resident to be the only resident to scrub with an attending on a complex head and neck resection or an otologic case. We feel that this provides the residents with an outstanding operative experience; feedback from our graduates suggests that this training model has helped them to enter life as an attending with confidence and skill.

Despite our small size, we cover all aspects of otolaryngology from “bread and butter” cases to complex skull base surgeries. Our environment is very collegial, and as trainees you will benefit from cross-disciplinary training with colleagues in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Audiology, Plastic Surgery, Oculoplastic Surgery, Mohs Surgery, Sleep Medicine, Radiology, Pathology, and Allergy/Immunology.

Research is also an important component of resident training. Residents all have dedicated research time during their third and fourth years. Our faculty have a variety of research interests and we encourage you to look at their profiles on the Geisel School of Medicine website. There will be many opportunities to take advantages of the resources available at the Dartmouth Institute, Dartmouth Cancer Center, Tuck School of Business, and Thayer School of Engineering.
