Emergency Department point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a core competency in all 3 years of the residency. Our faculty believe that ultrasound is an important skill that alters workups and patient care. To this point, ultrasound training is incorporated early into residency with a 2-day ultrasound orientation and a total of 4 weeks ultrasound-specific training during intern year.
The ultrasound syllabus incorporates an 18-month repeating curriculum that embraces a diversity of teaching methodologies including simulation, pass-the-pointer quality improvement rounds, cases, asynchronous online didactics, and traditional lecture. All clinical ultrasounds are wirelessly transmitted to Synchronicity for interpretation, faculty review, and feedback. Our program also fosters resident curiosity by encouraging research, quality improvement, and publication.
